Problem solving

I thrive on problem-solving, especially when faced with complex challenges. Tackling intricate user needs and layered business requirements energises me. My approach is logical and systematic—I break problems down into smaller, manageable parts, which allows me to develop solutions that fit together seamlessly.

One example is the US presidential election project I worked on at the BBC. It involved numerous stakeholders and third-party collaborators, and we initially had no clear starting point. I organised a workshop to map out our current assets, identify gaps, and determine how everything connected. By engaging with key stakeholders and I planned the next steps to ensure a great user experience.

Ambiguity

Ambiguity can be challenging, especially at the start of a new project, where loose requirements and unclear directions can lead to missteps. I manage ambiguity by fostering strong communication and collaboration among all involved parties. One strategy that works well for me is documenting key decisions, along with the reasoning behind them, in a central location accessible to everyone. This keeps the project aligned and provides clarity as we move forward.

I also see ambiguity as an opportunity to bring the team together to assess what we don’t know. This collective understanding helps us plan a clear path forward.

Needs management - user needs vs business needs

As UX designers, it's easy to focus solely on advocating for users, but the business has needs too. At the beginning of any project, I make it a priority to ask, "What does success look like for the company?" Understanding the key metrics and business objectives is essential to ensuring our work aligns with broader goals.

Once I’ve defined the user needs, I aim to create the best possible experience. I’m firm when I believe the user experience could be compromised by certain changes, but I also remain flexible—finding ways to meet business objectives with minimal impact on the overall user journey.
